The events that have followed in the wake of the devastating attack on the World Trade Center two years ago fostered a new appreciation of the sacrifices millions of young Americans make by serving in our Armed Forces. From the desolate mountains of Afghanistan to the burning deserts of the Middle East, hundreds of thousands of young American men and women have placed their own lives at risk to ensure the safety of those who remained behind. The idea for this book began simply enough:
I wanted to tell the story of how my husband Neal ended up in a Baltimore courtroom, singled out for persecution by "Big Medicine" and its allies in "Big Government." What I never anticipated was that the project would turn into a journey of discovery beyond anything I could have imagined.
It has opened my eyes to the crisis facing our nation's health care system.
